Microsoft Office SharePoint Elevation of Privilege Vulnerability
Published
What does this mean?
- Elevation of Privilege. An attacker can gain more rights than they should have, for example admin rights.
- It can be exploited over the network (including from the internet if the service is reachable there), without an account and without any user action.
- CVSS 8.1 out of 10: high. Microsoft rates it Critical.
- No attacks reported; Microsoft expects exploitation to be less likely.
- What should you do? Install the security update for the version you run (or a later cumulative update):
- Microsoft SharePoint Server Subscription Edition: KB5002927
16.0.20326.20190
- Microsoft SharePoint Server Subscription Edition: KB5002927
- This applies to SharePoint Server you run yourself. Microsoft updates SharePoint Online in Microsoft 365.
Improper verification of cryptographic signature in Microsoft Office SharePoint allows an unauthorized attacker to elevate privileges over a network.

How do I check if I am affected?
SharePoint Server: check and update
- Check your farm build in the SharePoint Management Shell:
Or in Central Administration → Upgrade and Migration → Check product and patch installation status.(Get-SPFarm).BuildVersion - If the build is equal to or higher than the build under "Affected products and updates" below, this vulnerability is fixed. A later cumulative update includes the fix too.
- Otherwise install the update on every server in the farm, then run the SharePoint Products Configuration Wizard, or:
PSConfig.exe -cmd upgrade -inplace b2b -wait -cmd applicationcontent -install -cmd installfeatures -cmd secureresources -cmd services -install - You do not need to update SharePoint Online in Microsoft 365; Microsoft does that.
What kind of flaw is this?
- CWE-347: Improper Verification of Cryptographic Signature
A digital signature is not verified correctly.

FAQ
- Is the Preview Pane an attack vector for this vulnerability?
- No, the Preview Pane is not an attack vector.
- How could an attacker exploit this vulnerability?
- An unauthenticated attacker who obtains a valid proof token for a targeted user could modify the token and submit it to an affected SharePoint server. Successful exploitation could allow the attacker to authenticate as that user and access or modify content available to the compromised account. User interaction is not required.
- According to the CVSS metric, the attack complexity is high (AC:H). What does this mean for this vulnerability?
- An attacker would need specific conditions to be in place (i.e. particular protocol settings, or configurations, etc.) before an attack could succeed, which reduces the likelihood of widespread or opportunistic exploitation.
