Microsoft SharePoint Server Elevation of Privilege Vulnerability
Published
What does this mean?
- Elevation of Privilege. An attacker can gain more rights than they should have, for example admin rights.
- It can be exploited over the network (including from the internet if the service is reachable there), without an account and without any user action.
- CVSS 5.3 out of 10: medium. Microsoft rates it Moderate.
- Already exploited in the wild. Microsoft reports attacks. Treat the update as a priority.
- What should you do? Install the security update for the version you run (or a later cumulative update):
- Microsoft SharePoint Server Subscription Edition: KB5002882
16.0.19725.20434 - Microsoft SharePoint Server 2019: KB5002883
16.0.10417.20175 - Microsoft SharePoint Enterprise Server 2016: KB5002891
16.0.5561.1001
- Microsoft SharePoint Server Subscription Edition: KB5002882
- This applies to SharePoint Server you run yourself. Microsoft updates SharePoint Online in Microsoft 365.
Missing authentication for critical function in Microsoft Office SharePoint allows an unauthorized attacker to elevate privileges over a network.

How do I check if I am affected?
SharePoint Server: check and update
- Check your farm build in the SharePoint Management Shell:
Or in Central Administration → Upgrade and Migration → Check product and patch installation status.(Get-SPFarm).BuildVersion - If the build is equal to or higher than the build under "Affected products and updates" below, this vulnerability is fixed. A later cumulative update includes the fix too.
- Otherwise install the update on every server in the farm, then run the SharePoint Products Configuration Wizard, or:
PSConfig.exe -cmd upgrade -inplace b2b -wait -cmd applicationcontent -install -cmd installfeatures -cmd secureresources -cmd services -install - You do not need to update SharePoint Online in Microsoft 365; Microsoft does that.

Mitigations
The following mitigating factors might be helpful in your situation: Enable AMSI: Ensure the Antimalware Scan Interface (AMSI) is actively integrated and scanning SharePoint and IIS worker process memory. Enable AMSI scan feature and set the Request Body Scan mode to Full in order for POST body payloads to be detected. Configure AMSI integration with SharePoint Server - https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/sharepoint/security-for-sharepoint-server/configure-amsi-integration
FAQ
- According to the CVSS metric, the attack vector is network (AV:N) and the attack complexity is low (AC:L). What does that mean for this vulnerability?
- The attack vector is Network (AV:N) because this vulnerability is remotely exploitable and can be exploited from the internet. The attack complexity is Low (AC:L) because an attacker does not require significant prior knowledge of the system and can achieve repeatable success with the payload against the vulnerable component.
- I am running SharePoint Server 2016. Do the updates for SharePoint Enterprise Server 2016 also apply to the version I am running?
- Yes. The same KB number applies to both SharePoint Server 2016 and SharePoint Enterprise Server 2016. Customers running either version should install the security update to be protected from this vulnerability.
